E-meet our student resident from HEID-VD: Leslie

Leslie Bent from HEIG-VD is going to stay with us in Rio de Janeiro for two months.. Please e-meet Leslie!

Could you tell us a little bit more about yourself and why you are joining the team?

I am a final year student from the School of Business and Engineering Vaud in Switzerland (HEIG-VD). I am currently working on my Bachelor’s thesis focused on Brazilian banks’ internationalization strategies. Part of my thesis is being conducted in Rio at swissnex Brazil’s office and (I have been granted a scholarship for this project).

To present you a little bit of my background, I have first started with an apprenticeship in the commercial field working for a small town in Switzerland. After obtaining my Maturity degree, I went to the United States for a year as an “au pair”, taking care of five children. It gave me the opportunity to improve my language and intercultural skills. When I came back to Switzerland I decided to start a Bachelor degree in economics at the HEIG-VD, which enable the students to work part-time. This is a strong asset as students can put into practice the knowledge they acquire. Along side my studies, I worked for four years at the International Relations office of EPFL, mostly organizing visits and events for academic partners. I show a real interest in international business and economics with an accent into humanitarian projects. I would like to further develop my career in that field.

I have multicultural origins, as my mother is Portuguese and my father Swiss and British. I am an open-minded person, always willing to learn new things and share experiences. Besides, I love outdoor activities and being on the move.

What are your first impressions about Rio?

It is probably not a surprise if I say that Rio is an amazing city. It is a strong cultural shock though, not only the environment and sights are different but Brazilians have a daily routine, which is far away from a typical Swiss one.

I am a food lover and the Brazilian gastronomy is wide, you are not only able to taste a full variety of exotic fruits but also pão de queijo, pasteis, etc.

Could you give us more information about your university and how you ended up in Rio?

The HEIG-VD is Management and Engineering School and is the largest partner of the University of Applied Sciences, Western Switzerland. It has over 2000 students in its Bachelor, Master and Postgraduate programs. It transforms knowledge into products and services with high added value, by linking the latest theoretical knowledge with the demands of professional practice.

My Bachelor project is part of the International Management field and is analyzing why the Brazilian banks are internationalizing and how they implement their operations in Switzerland.
