Recycling of White Goods in Brazil
MSc Business Administration
Project Manager / Research Associate
From the 23rd of March until the 3rd of April 2015, I got the opportunity to participate in the swissnex 2015 Personal Mobility Program in Brazil.
Since I work for the International Department in the Center for Business in the Americas at the ZHAW School of Management and Law, I deal with the Latin American market. Brazil is one of our main focus countries, as it is, amongst others, the seventh largest economy worldwide.
The main goal of the two-weeks stay at swissnex Brazil in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro was to analyze and to get a deeper insight of the topic “Recycling of White Goods in Brazil”, mainly refrigerators. In this regard, I had several meetings with various stakeholders of the value chain in the recycling sector such as associations, recyclers and universities.
My research activity started in Sao Paulo as it is Brazil’s economic, financial and technical hub as well as the biggest city of the country. Furthermore, a lot of the recyclable waste from all over Brazil is transported to Sao Paulo to be processed. Another important city in terms of recycling waste is Rio de Janeiro. Therefore, Rio de Janeiro was the second location I visited during my stay in Brazil.
Thanks to the very informative conversations I had during my stay, I got a clear understanding of the present recycling situation of Brazil, its challenges and opportunities. With certain contacts, further meetings are scheduled to discuss a possible future collaboration between the ZHAW and local contacts. On this note, I would like to express my gratitude to all the people who have supported and kindly received me on site.
Since I had never been to Brazil before, this trip also gave me, next to the business part, the chance to explore the two cities and to learn more about the Brazilian culture and habits in general. In conclusion,it can be said that my stay in Brazil was very interesting and informative from both, the business and personal perspectives.
